PROJECT NEED
Our impact area is civic engagement and leadership. We have learned the importance of leadership from our Kind Club meetings. We know that in order to make a difference in our world, we need to work together to make change happen.
Our team wants to move our community towards an anti-bullying environment. We want to raise the awareness of students, parents and teachers about the harmful effects and the lifelong impacts bullying has on all parties. Almost one in four students report being bullied and it is estimated that 64% of children that are being bullied do not report it. This infers that a huge part of our community is being negatively impacted by bullying, and we want to do our part to help those in need.
As part of our project, we surveyed students at our school to learn more about their bullying experiences. We learned that:
Based on these results, we learned that a majority of our students have been the victim of traditional and/or cyber bullying, and felt that it was essential that we provide students with an opportunity to learn more about the harmful effects of bullying, and some positive ways to combat bullying. For example, we encourage students to start a Kind Club, talk to a trusted adult, or respectfully ask the bully to stop.
Our team felt that the work we are doing at our school is very important and needs to be shared with other schools. We visited eight elementary schools, and encouraged students to start their own Kind Club and anti-bullying program. We researched bullying and anti-bullying programs, and learned that elementary and middle school students are most affected by bullying. This inspired us to focus on elementary and middle school students. We want to educate students about bullying so that they can find solutions before bullying escalates. Student led anti-bullying programs are far more effective, and more than 50% of bullying situations can be resolved by the intervention of another student. Our goal was to share our message and teach as many students as possible about the harmful effects of bullying, and how to combat bullying by starting a Kind Club or other anti-bullying program.
Our project taught us important leadership skills. We were responsible for educating the students we spoke to at our school and at the eight local elementary schools. We overcame our fears about public speaking, and became more confident from our experiences.
